Will the DJ Play My Song List?

(1 minute read) Will the DJ play my song list? This is a top 3 question from potential clients. I’m guessing some DJ’s are not open to playing only a client’s list of songs. I have a different perspective on that. Ultimately, it’s the client’s party. If they want a certain song list played, they should get it. I typically give client’s feedback on any song list submitted. The feedback is based on experience with various crowds and event types. With that said, I’ve seen non-typical lists work amazing at an event. I’ve had client’s submit 100% curated lists for the night. Everything from hour one, to the last 30 minutes. The curated list worked flawlessly with the crowd.

As a DJ, it’s important to realize the bride and groom could have been imagining this event for a long time. It’s not a DJ’s place to deny the vision. For me, it’s best practice for the DJ to have an open mind on a submitted song list.

Some clients do not have a specific playlist, they just have a theme or vibe to aim for. This approach works for me as well. This is where an experienced DJ is important. The ability to read a room does not come with doing just a few events. Various crowd types and event themes can take years to learn.

The client and DJ are a team, working together to complete the expected outcome. Communication and preparation are keys to a successful event. Remember to discuss if the DJ will play your song list. This is an important factor, before signing any contracts. If the DJ is not willing to play your song list, maybe they are not the best fit.
